Type 2 Diabetes / Managing Diabetes in Public Places

Testing blood sugar in public places is nothing to be ashamed of. The accuracy of the reading is, however, most important. Couple of interesting information on the accuracy of blood sugar reading can be found here:

Treatment and Management of Diabetes / Afrezza

A new form of insulin therapy is about to become available for type I diabetic patients.  For those Type I diabetic patients who are tired of frequent glucose injections or being tethered to an insulin pump, this new drug could be the answer.  Afrezza is an inhalable form of insulin that can substitute for short acting insulin.  Its onset of action is similar to Lispro rapid acting insulin.  It is administered by oral inhalation and the dose is determined by using combinations of 4 Unit and 8 Unit doses so that doses of 4,8,12, 16,20 and 24 units can be achieved.  Afrezza can cause bronchospasm, and therefore should not be used in patients with asthma or COPD.  There were also reports of lung cancer is Afrezza users in clinical trials and no lung cancer in the placebo group.  The numbers were small and the patients were smokers who got lung cancer so there is uncertainty whether Afrezza can increase the risk of lung cancer.  Afrezza is not recommended for patients who smoke or who have recently quit smoking.  Afrezza cannot substitute for Long Acting Insulin.  Adverse effects of Afrezza, besides bronchospasm, can be hypoglycemia and Ketoacidosis.  Careful monitoring of capillary fingersitck glucose readings is recommended to monitor for the development of hypoglycemia or elevated glucose that could be associated with the development of Ketoacidosis.  Other reported side effects include cough, throat pain, headache, diarrhea, tiredness and nausea.  Links to more information are available below:

Type 1 Diabetes / What are the symptoms of Type 1 diabetes?

Also, I would recommend taking it with meals. That seems to be the standard of practice in the studies I reviewed. Plus, vinegar can be hard on the stomach.

In response to the question about vinegar, the studies so far are promising in terms of the benefits to Type 2 diabetics. First, there is little evidence in support of weight loss, but it does increase the feeling of being full. Thus, you may be eating less, which would help to control weight. Results regarding the benefit of increasing the body's response to your natural insulin are mixed. However, it is fairly well established that ingesting vinegar with high carb count meals will reduce postprandial sugars. There are no significant benefits when injesting low carb count meals. Regular injestion of vinegar can also improve A1c, but studies thus far have mostly been only preliminary with small sample sizes. The supposed mechanism for the major benefits come from the belief that the vinegar slows the digestion/absorption process.

Thank you for your comment.

What type of Diabetes do you have? What does the shot of apple cider vinegar treat?

Your answers to these questions will help me better understand your condition so that I can provide some advice.

Type 1 Diabetes / What are the symptoms of Type 1 diabetes?

Hi Jenny,

When I was first diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, my blood sugars were running very high because my pancreas was not producing insulin . Therefore, I was very dehydrated, had to urinate often, and felt very tired and weak.

I typed in "Type 1 symptoms" into the search box on the "diabetes videos" section of this website and it brought me to this video:

It looks very informative. I hope this helps you out!
